Dentist attitudes towards nutrition in perio disease management

A survey conducted by the School of Dental Sciences at the University of Newcastle, UK, investigated the opinions and attitudes of dentists and hygienists towards the impact of nutrition in periodontal disease management. Outcomes revealed that the majority of dentists consider nutrition and dietary factors to play a role in maintaining periodontal health, however, the evidence base to support this was found to be lacking and created uncertainty among dentists. The study suggested a need for further research into the therapeutic role of nutrition in periodontal disease management and identified the need for clinical guidance on what nutritional advice should be offered to patients. Dental Learning Hub spoke to researcher, Dr Sarah Kelly, about the project.
