Research group inspires students, multiplies output

The portfolio of student research at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Dentistry, Canada, has increased by 200% in the past year and tripled over the past two years, because of a nationwide programme dedicated to this area. The Canadian Association for Dental Research National Student Research Group (CADR-NSRG), established in September 2007, supports the formation of active local student research groups at each of the country’s 10 dental schools.

Stuart Fischman honoured for contribution to dental research

The IADR has awarded the 2008 Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology Research Award to Dr Stuart Fischman at the 86th General Session and Exhibition, held on July 2-5 in Toronto, Canada. Throughout his career, Fischman has made significant contributions to the evaluation of drugs to prevent or treat dental caries and periodontal disease. He has designed and managed many clinical trials and has published more than 100 articles in research journals. The award is in recognition of his “outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to our knowledge of the mechanisms, efficacy or safety of drugs used in dentistry", according to the IADR. Dental Learning Hub asked him a few questions about this research and career.

IADR recognises young researcher at annual congress

Dr Philip Preshaw from the UK’s University of Newcastle School of Dentistry, was awarded the Young Investigator’s Award at the 86th General Session and Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) held in Toronto, Canada. The IADR Young Investigator Award, supported by Crest Oral-B, P&G Professional Health, is designed to stimulate basic research in all dental disciplines. The recipient must not have reached his/her 40th birthday at the time the award is presented and the award consists of a cash prize and a plaque. Dental Learning Hub spoke with Preshaw about the award and what it means for his future research goals.
