Good results for early loading of mandibular full-arch bridges

Professor Kristina Arvidson Fyrberg, head of Centre for Clinical Dental Research, University of Bergen in Norway talked to Dental Learning Hub about the significance of a 3-year prospective multicentre study. Results showed positive trends for early loading of mandibular full-arch bridges screw retained after 1 week to four to five Monotype implants.

Dental Learning Hub: Briefly explain the advantages of undertaking a multicentre study.
Kristina Arvidson: You can prove that there are some differences in handling the patients with regard to routines, technical skills of the doctors and dental technicians as well the patients.

Dental Learning Hub: What were the most significant outcomes of your research?
Kristina Arvidson: So far that early loading could be as good as delayed loading but the study is not a RCT.
Differences in the results were also obtained between centres and bone classes.

Dental Learning Hub: What do your results indicate about implant treatment strategies for the mandibular edentulous patient?
Kristina Arvidson: Clinically, to be edentulous in the lower jaw is an awful handicap and we have proven that the period from implant installation to install a permanent full-arch bridge can be obtained after 1 week.
