Patient-driven campaign puts oral cancer on the agenda
.aspx)
Having experienced the devastating effects of oral cancer firsthand, professional storyteller, Eva Grayzel has become an advocate for oral cancer awareness. Her campaign, coined "The Sextet Screening: Six Steps to a Thorough Oral Cancer Screening," focuses on early detection and screening and has received a prestigious award from the American Academy of Oral Medicine.
“If oral cancer can happen to me it can happen to anyone” says Grayzel, who had never smoked and rarely drank when diagnosed with Stage 4 oral cancer, lateral tongue, at age 33. With an extraordinarily successful tongue reconstruction, neck dissection and radiation therapy, she branched into motivational speaking to share her story educating healthcare providers and the general public about the importance of oral cancer screening. She now lectures at dental schools and medical conferences worldwide.
The Sextet Screening programme is designed to create awareness among the patient community, encouraging them to request a thorough screening from their dental practices. It also features a six-step demonstration with photos of a thorough oral cancer screening test as performed by an oral healthcare practitioner.
As part of the campaign, Grayzel has also designed Sextet Screening postcards which dentists (who have completed recent Continuing Education on early detection) can purchase and use to educate the local community while soliciting new business for their practices.

Supported by a grant from the National Library of Medicine and the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (grant number G08 LM008956), the site also features critical summaries of systematic reviews that assess information within systematic reviews in a concise format so that health care workers can incorporate scientific evidence in clinical decision making.
