NobelVision from a user perspective
Dr Robert Wardius, heads the Wardius Center for Dental Cosmetics in Reading, Pennsylvania. He has practised dentistry for 28 years and specialised in implants, prosthetics and cosmetics. He joined the NobelVision network 5 months ago and he told Dental Learning Hub what impact it has made on his practice.
Question: What was your main reason for bringing NobelVision into your practice?
Robert Wardius: To give patients an opportunity to learn as much as they can about the different implant procedures that we perform here in our office. We also do a lot of sedation cases so it also gives their escort an opportunity to learn about our office and the procedures we are able to do.
Question: How does NobelVision impact on your practice?
Robert Wardius: By having Nobel Vision in our reception room, it adds credibility to our recommended treatment plan. During a consult I go over the treatment options the patient has. They already have an idea of the different procedures I'm explaining to them because they've seen it on the TV. I often hear "that's what they were talking about on the TV, isn't it?"
Question: Have you had any feedback from patients about it?
Robert Wardius: Patients really enjoy learning from the different clips that are shown. For a lot of patients it helps them to understand a recommended treatment. For their escort it often informs them on what is happening with the person they brought to the office. Also, it has opened doors for them, where they didn't realize they had a real chance to have their own issues taken care of. One incident in particular, a patient’s husband came in to pick her up after sedation. While he was waiting he was reading, however, when I came out to tell him how his wife's procedure went, he was more interested in talking about how implants could help him get rid of a very uncomfortable denture. We didn't realize how much he was listening to the TV when it appeared he was engrossed in his book!
Question: Do you see NobelVision as a continuing feature of your practice for the future?
Robert Wardius: Absolutely! Its educational value is a wonderful tool to help our patients understand the ‘why and how’ of their treatments.
Question: Are there any additional features you would like NobelVision to have?
Robert Wardius: When we first got it we were told that it wouldn't only be Nobel Biocare but other products as well. We are a very cutting edge office and it will be great when other products are added on. Some additions we look forward to seeing on NobelVision are laser dentistry, cerec crowns, diagnodent, and care credit. Most importantly more information on the ‘All on 4’ technique. This is the most exciting procedure we perform for patients.

When Jordan Sparks qualified as a dentist and started his own practice, he became increasingly frustrated with the practice management software he was using because of the lack of access he had to his raw data and limited features that he really needed. To solve his problems, he built an image management module designed as a standalone to supplement his existing system. Building it was easier than he thought it would be, so he decided to write an entire open source practice management software from scratch and called it OpenDental. Since the first crude version was done about 5 years ago, it has been refined and reworked several times. Dental Learning Hub asked Jordan about his work and the marriage of IT and dentistry.
