Web-based office package tailored to dental practices

USA: DentalXChange has launched a website that allows the daily running of dental offices to be streamlined and efficient. Dental Learning Hub spoke with Yousuf Nabi, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at DentalXChange  to explain more about the new product and how such technology solutions can benefit dentistry.

Dental Learning Hub: How did DentalXChange originate?
Yousuf Nabi: With nearly two decades of experience in claims processing and practice management software for the dental industry, our company’s founders realized that dental providers and payers could greatly reduce workload and costs, and increase operational and transactional efficiencies  by developing a platform that would enable them to migrate their practices’ revenue management applications from a slow, cumbersome, time-consuming paper-based system to a real-time EDI (electronic data interchange) model. By developing and deploying our web-based DentalXChange service, we’re enabling dental practices to make their operations more efficient, reduce workflow, minimize errors, and improve the overall experience for their patients.

Dental Learning Hub: How is DentalXChange unique from other integrated solutions available in the dental market?
Yousuf Nabi: DentalXChange offers the practice revenue management solution for providers, payers and patients utilizing cutting-edge web-based technology solutions which increase efficiencies and lower operational costs. In addition to providing the ability to manage claims processing and provide real-time patient eligibility information to the dental service providers, DentalXChange can also provide desktop POS and web-based support for debit/credit card processing and can provide online bill management. DentalXChange also offers its own patient financing program delivering low or no APR financing options enabling patients to obtain the dentist-recommended treatment that they need.

Dental Learning Hub: In a typical day at a dental practice, how is DentalXChange implemented?
Yousuf Nabi: DentalXChange is an integral component of the revenue management aspect of the dental practice.  Using the web-based interface, administrators can easily, and in real time, verify patient benefits, process claims, accept credit card or check payments, apply for patient financing, and issue statements to the patients. This is all accomplished through an easy-to-use interface and is completed in real-time via EDI, eliminating the paper-based procedures that inherently encourage delays and errors in claims processing.

Dental Learning Hub: How was the site designed in terms of user friendliness for multiple users in a practice?
Yousuf Nabi: Each user is provided a unique username and password to access the DentalXChange system.  Though the system is designed to enable multiple users in a given dental practice, it is often desirable to have a single administrator who is responsible for the processing of patient claims and payment transactions.  That said, the easy-to-use system can be set up to provide access to multiple users, each utilizing their own username and password in order to maintain and track access to secure patient health and financial information (PHI).

Dental Learning Hub: Do you expect any functionality or applications will be added to DentalXChange over the coming years?
Yousuf Nabi: DentalXChange was designed with the needs of the dental industry’s payers, providers and patients in mind. Our goal is to provide streamlined technology, connectivity and transaction solutions to the industry in all areas of the revenue management cycle of the practice. We’re in continuous dialogue with our clients and are always looking for new ways to help improve the processes to provide a better overall experience for everyone involved. As these new requirements are identified, we’ll evaluate the addition of features to support industry demands.

Dental Learning Hub: How will dental practices of the future look and how do you predict they will operate day to day?
Yousuf Nabi: Dental practices are already transitioning to the speed and accuracy offered through the emergence of digital technology solutions. Radiology equipment is transitioning to digital media, eliminating the need for expensive films and creating a near-instantaneous image that can be easily edited and transferred, can be archived indefinitely and requires no file cabinet space.

Our solution brings the benefits of digital technology to the administrative side of the dental practice by increasing operational efficiencies, reducing or eliminating the need to store vast amounts of paper, and providing faster, more accurate transactions between parties. The practice of the future will be all-digital, but the great thing is that a rapidly growing number of dental practices are enjoying that capability today through the value and service that DentalXChange provides.  Many suppliers of dental management software are already working with us to fully integrate our EDI solutions into their products providing a truly seamless solution to the daily tasks faced by the dental office.

When Jordan Sparks qualified as a dentist and started his own practice, he became increasingly frustrated with the practice management software he was using because of the lack of access he had to his raw data and limited features that he really needed. To solve his problems, he built an image management module designed as a standalone to supplement his existing system. Building it was easier than he thought it would be, so he decided to write an entire open source practice management software from scratch and called it OpenDental. Since the first crude version was done about 5 years ago, it has been refined and reworked several times. Dental Learning Hub asked Jordan about his work and the marriage of IT and dentistry.
